Based around the theme of a weekend craft food market, Sunday Market Brunch at the Shanghai Marriott Hotel City Centre has one of the more relaxed atmospheres they’ve encountered at hotel brunch in Shanghai with high quality seafood and a wide buffet selection of international cuisines.

Don’t miss the juicy oysters, freshly shucked with flourish from a wheelbarrow in the centre of the floor – on their visit there was an almost constant queue, so make sure to join it early. Around this sits the seafood station with huge Alaskan crab legs, shrimp and fresh sashimi.

Away from the seafood they liked the delicate flavours from petite dim sum and the particularly flavour-packed Indian station with meltingly soft chicken and lamb tandoori skewers.

They also enjoyed the friendly marketplace touches, such as made to order tacos and a giant multi-foot long seafood sub sandwich tantalising waiting to be sliced to go. Meanwhile waitstaff decked out in quirky print T-shirts make sure your glass is always topped up and bring round trays of ‘samples’ from each stall for you to try. Pleasingly these touches are always well balanced so the theme never distracts from the quality food or your leisurely brunch conversation.

Their only complaint came with slightly dried out roast beef and mash potato left too long in the pot at the roast dinner section. Tucked away in a corner of the kitchen set up, it could use a little more focus to add some life into the winter Sunday staple.

There’s also a good range of drinks with Champagne or made to order mojitos and self-serve fridges packed with soft drinks.

For families, there’s also a kids’ corner where the little ones can escape the boring grown ups table and get hands-on with pizza and cookie making under the watchful eye of the Marriott staff before chowing down on their own creations.
